I might be wrong about this or they might have changed it. Can't be bothered to look it up.. But I thought that both CL and EL had the same amount of qualifying rounds?.. Cl at least used to have 3 qualifying rounds and then a play-off before the group stages.. May it be that they just haven't shown examples of that above? Also, do CL teams 5 points for just participating in the group stage while EL teams get nothing? That would make a difference..
And regarding the extra round in EL, that only leads to one extra set of points, not two (as you get points for going to the next round they would in that case only get one round more of points).
My second Debate&Discussion topic : Do you think Europa League teams should get less points?
First, I would like to share the current Point System of UEFA for both UCL and UEL Competitions.
A team starting from Europa League group stages (considered to reach the Final) plays
-6 games at Groups stages
-2 games in Round of 32
-2 games in Round of 16
-2 games in Quarter Finals
-2 games in Semi Finals
-1 game in Final
15 games during their process to the Final.
A team starting from Group stages of Champions League (considered to reach the Final) plays
-6 games at Group Stages
-2 games in Round of 16
-2 games in Quarter Finals
-2 game in Semi Finals
-1 game in Final
13 game during their process to the Final.
So Teams are playing more games in Europa League than the Champions League. Europa League teams get exactly the same point at the Group Stages with the Champions League Group Stage teams. For example, Beşiktaş in Champions League plays Real Madrid in Group Stages of CL and wins, we get 2 Points; or Beşiktaş plays Krosnodar at the Europa League Group stages and wins, we get the exact same point. This is unfair for Champions League teams.
Europa League teams are awarded the exact same Points for reaching Round of 32 with the teams reaching the Round of 16 of Champions League. The same thing happens on the other Round Stages.
Edit: Except Champions League teams get 4 more points for reaching Round of 16, but they also play 2 less games than a team plays in Round of 16 in Europa League. So, I think we can still call it even.
Considering these calculations, let's say Real Madrid played in Europa League for the Last 5 years. I think we all would agree that they would win it at least 3 or 4 times. They would still be the top of the Ranking System. Yes, Money distribution won't be the same as in Champions League but according to the Point System they would still be considered the best team in the world.
Or another example, 2 years Europa League Finalist Sevilla got more points than Chelsea or PSG. Yes, Sevilla has been awesome, no doubt on that but did they deserve more points than Chelsea or PSG?
Benfica is considered the 6th best team in the world right now. For what? Been Eliminated AT CL Group Stages?
So I believe UEFA's Point System is unfair.
What are your opinions?
