Discussion Thread #2 - Europa League teams get more points than they deserve?

My second Debate&Discussion topic : Do you think Europa League teams should get less points?

First, I would like to share the current Point System of UEFA for both UCL and UEL Competitions.

A team starting from Europa League group stages (considered to reach the Final) plays
-6 games at Groups stages
-2 games in Round of 32
-2 games in Round of 16
-2 games in Quarter Finals
-2 games in Semi Finals
-1 game in Final
15 games during their process to the Final.

A team starting from Group stages of Champions League (considered to reach the Final) plays
-6 games at Group Stages
-2 games in Round of 16
-2 games in Quarter Finals
-2 game in Semi Finals
-1 game in Final
13 game during their process to the Final.

So Teams are playing more games in Europa League than the Champions League. Europa League teams get exactly the same point at the Group Stages with the Champions League Group Stage teams. For example, Beşiktaş in Champions League plays Real Madrid in Group Stages of CL and wins, we get 2 Points; or Beşiktaş plays Krosnodar at the Europa League Group stages and wins, we get the exact same point. This is unfair for Champions League teams.
Europa League teams are awarded the exact same Points for reaching Round of 32 with the teams reaching the Round of 16 of Champions League. The same thing happens on the other Round Stages.
Edit: Except Champions League teams get 4 more points for reaching Round of 16, but they also play 2 less games than a team plays in Round of 16 in Europa League. So, I think we can still call it even.

Considering these calculations, let's say Real Madrid played in Europa League for the Last 5 years. I think we all would agree that they would win it at least 3 or 4 times. They would still be the top of the Ranking System. Yes, Money distribution won't be the same as in Champions League but according to the Point System they would still be considered the best team in the world.
Or another example, 2 years Europa League Finalist Sevilla got more points than Chelsea or PSG. Yes, Sevilla has been awesome, no doubt on that but did they deserve more points than Chelsea or PSG?
Benfica is considered the 6th best team in the world right now. For what? Been Eliminated AT CL Group Stages?

So I believe UEFA's Point System is unfair.
What are your opinions?

I might be wrong about this or they might have changed it. Can't be bothered to look it up.. But I thought that both CL and EL had the same amount of qualifying rounds?.. Cl at least used to have 3 qualifying rounds and then a play-off before the group stages.. May it be that they just haven't shown examples of that above? Also, do CL teams 5 points for just participating in the group stage while EL teams get nothing? That would make a difference..

And regarding the extra round in EL, that only leads to one extra set of points, not two (as you get points for going to the next round they would in that case only get one round more of points).

" But I thought that both CL and EL had the same amount of qualifying rounds?"

Yes, they both have 3 qualifying Rounds and one Play-off Round.

"do CL teams 5 points for just participating in the group stage while EL teams get nothing?"

CL teams get 4 points just for participating in the group stage , and El teams get at least 2 points for participating in group stage. And I forgot to mention that all the El teams, except 12 League Cup winners, have to play at qualifying Rounds while Most of the CL teams directly starts from Group stages. So EL teams play more games.

"And regarding the extra round in EL, that only leads to one extra set of points, not two (as you get points for going to the next round they would in that case only get one round more of points). "

They get 1 point just for been on that extra Round, but you have to win the games or draw to process to the further Stages. So that makes at least 3 more points actually.

My bad, didn't read thougouhly enough above. So basically, EL teams play more games with lower points awarded but accunulative they get as many points as the CL teams.

Its obviously bad for the individual team ranking as it isn't accurate at all, but who cares about that ranking anyways? However, It's important to determine the coefficients for countries and thus if basically the same points are rewarded for EL and CL it covers for a bigger part of the league table instead of giving Spain maximum points through Barca and Real as they advances through CL all the time. Instead the standard of teams that are ranked lower matters such as Sevilla or Liverpool. I see nothing wrong with this. Especially since most top leagues have more places in CL than in EL and expecially since teams from all leagues get a second chance in EL if being beaten in the group stages of CL..

I am obviously happy about it because we're 6th in Europe but I agree at the same time that Europa League shouldn't give as much points as it gives at the moment. As a Benfica fan I can say Benfica is not the 6th best team in Europe right now and this goes for other teams as well that are too far up on the ranking because of EL.
