Chelsea transfer Strategy

Chelsea FC, Sweden 52 2449

Chelsea started out by signing Begovic and Falcao, primarily to be used as subs. Nathan was also brought in but immediately loaned out to Vitesse. After a poor start of the season Chelsea brought in Baba from Augsburg and Pedro from Barcelona. Rumors has it Abramovich has given his okay to sign even more players in order to defend the BPL title.

Chelsea has reportedly offered £30m for Stones which has been rejected and some rumors say they'll launch a second bid for the defender (Everton asking for as much as £40m!) but that Chelsea are waiting to see if Stones will ask to leave the club himself. Some people say Terry got subbed (For the first time under Mou) just in order to give Stones a personal message that a position is vacant in Chelsea for him to fill.

Other loose rumors have been regarding Pogba and Griezman, where both transfers seem highly unlikely as Pogba seems bound for Barca in a year and Griezman just signing a contract extension with a massive buy-out clause. Witsel has also been mentioned.

So questions being:

1, Do Chelsea need to sign more players? If so, in what position? Who do you want to get? Who CAN we get?

2, Will anyone leave? Who?

3, What would your dream Chelsea XI be?

  1. Do Chelsea need to sign more players? If so, in what position? Who do you want to get? Who CAN we get?

Perhaps defense, to keep an eye out for injuries. In CB you have Zouma, Terry, and Cahill as the established ones. I'm hoping Zouma gets more playing time and becomes a prominent figure in the Chelsea XI this season, but Terry is aging and more prone to injuries now. If he gets injured, it could spell big trouble for Chelsea. I'm also not sure how good Rahman is because I've never seen him, but I'll assume he's a decent LB and that you don't need anyone else there.

At DM you have Matic, Mikel, and Cesc (who isn't even a proper DM, just being used as a deep playmaker). You'd want an ideal sub for Cesc. Mikel is decent enough to replace Matic for games, but the last thing you want is Cesc getting exhausted near the crucial parts of the season due to excessive game-time.

I still believe Chelsea need a really classy AM, especially since Mata had left. Oscar seems to be an on-and-off player, and Willian is good but not an AM. (*cough* buy Ozil *cough*). In all reality, purchasing Ozil doesn't seem all that far-fetched. He's played under Mou before, he likes playing under Mou, and Mou knows how to use him successfully (more than Wenger, at least). Pastore wouldn't be a bad option either, but, for me, your best and most realistic option is Koke! He is all class in that position, exactly the type of rugged, rough, and classy playmaker Mourinho wants.

Your wingers and forwards are in good shape, no need to spend more money there.

  1. Will anyone leave? Who?

Why is Moses still at the club? He should leave soon. I also expect Cuadrado to leave after a miserable spell in London, and Falcao will most likely leave after his loan as well (although these will happen next season).

  1. What would your dream Chelsea XI be?

Courtois
Azpilicueta - Terry - Zouma - Rahman
Matic - Cesc
Pedro - Koke - Hazard
Costa

If Chelsea want to compete in Europe they need considerable depth, and player that don't mind not starting every week. I did like the Rahman signing from Chelsea's perspective because it gives them a solid player (I think) that is not going to start week in, week out. That's what they need. The starting 11 of Chelsea is as solid as any in the world, it's the depth where they've had issues. What if Costa goes down like he did last year? Remy and Falcao are acceptable replacements. Fabregas? Terry? Matic? Forgetting injuries, what about tournaments like the FA Cup, or even UCL group stages? Do you have to use your starting eleven because your depth isn't good enough to beat a European opponent, or even a third-tier British side?

I think Chelsea is mostly there. The defeat to City and draw with Swansea should be the exception, not the rule.

  1. Do Chelsea need to sign more players? If so, in what position? Who do you want to get? Who CAN we get?

My thoughts are as following: As Dynastian said the only weak spot in Chelsea would be the CAM.

I'm not to worried about the CM getting injured because Mikel (and probably Zouma too?) can cover for Matic, while Ramires can cover for Fabregas. Would be a different set-up and a different type of play with Ramires being the box-to-box player he is, but it would still work!

Personally I like Oscar but as Dyn said he's an on-off player. Maybe an alternative is needed here. Let's dream that both Pogba and Griezman would be available, I'm not too sure who'd I chosen. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm guessing Griezman would play higher up than Pogba? thus taking space from Costa, who only should be a target man.. I mean give him the ball in the box and he'll find a way to score! In that sense it would make more sense to add Pogba to the team. On the other hand if Pogba prefer to play a bit deeper, perhaps Fabregas would have less room to practice as a playmaker and that wouldn't be an option.

So basically both Griezman and Pogba would have to play as ordinary CAM's. Pretty much where Oscar plays today, for it to work. So in that regard the stats above would look different. If Pogba had played like that today he would have scored more goals and had less take-ons and interceptions.

I just don't know who I would pick of them. Any input on this if we are to dream a little? Realistically I think the chance is a lot higher to get Griezman to Chelsea than Pogba but most likely we won't get any of them. And I don't know of any other alternativs that I would prefer over Oscar (And perhaps Willian) if he starts to play as CAM now when Pedro has arrived.

  1. I think Cuadrado will be loaned out to Juve or a team in Italy this window.. He's not needed in Chelsea any more. Moses is ahead of him in the order after a great pre-season (He's injured now, otherwise he might had subbed in). Terry, Cahill and Brani also sits loose at the moment.. but I think they'll stay put for this season too. Chelsea hasn't renewed Ivanovichs contract yet and he has one year to go. Same with Terry. Terry, Cahill and Ivanovich all aren't given start players no longer. With Babas arrival I think that Ivanovich might play as CB ahead of Cahill but if Stones come I think he'll be sold..

Courtois
Azpilicueta - Stones - Zouma - Rahman
Matic -
Cesc
Pedro - Pogba/Griezman - Hazard
Costa

@KTB

Griezmann isn't a proper AM. He is a good RW, but has found improbable success as a striker. His poaching abilities are excellent, as are his pressing abilities. He is effectively Costa minus the strength and violence, with some excellent positioning to boot. Griezmann's vision is decent, but not much better than Willian's. He wouldn't be a good upgrade on the Chelsea XI because it would mean that someone has to make way for him.

The thing is we don't need to sign players we need, we can also sign world class players we want.

We all know that Mourinho is one of Pogba's biggest fans, If we do manage to offlaod a few players, I won't be surprised if Mou makes a late move.

Incredible how some players develop! Even more so how the prices go up..

Pogba free transfer from United to Juve 3 years ago, now valued at £38m but will prob go for £70m..

Baba bought a year ago for £2m..now valued at £7m but sold for for £14m...

You know we can actually now bid and get Pogba for less than 70 maybe like 69.99 , still good price ... Consider fact that other clubs are loaded with players right now so Pogba is panicking and his Greedy agent too therefore we are in good position to bid .

If we get Stones and Pogba , I will just cry from happiness and watch with tears on my eyes Chelsea taking a part EPL and bossing in Europe head to head with Giants .

Loan moar.

Seriously, if just plain loaning out players hasten development, you'd have thought Chelsea would have some youth academy players coming through.

You would have thought United have some youth academy players coming through ... from all the constant talking about Chelsea way of developing players

CFC strategy is good for the club and for the fans, but deadly for many many players they signed .

@mladen

Whether you believe it or not but we are in top 4 best clubs in the world , so it takes special talent to make our first team . Those youngsters are not forced to join us ... they are given opportunity to shine and prove their worth. We patiently invest in them and send them on loans . They benefit for being associated with Chelsea and having a chance to prove themselves else where before coming back . Courtois , Zouma , Loftus cheek only few make the grade ...

Oscar came as a young unknown boy but went straight into the team . Azpilicueta came as back up . Completely unknown but now he is one of the best left back in the world. We give chances to those who take them . Those who work hard give extra effort . We are not mid table club to let them keep on playing until they find themselves. We are competing with top clubs . Those who are special find their way into the first team .
