Chelsea Football Club has reported a record profit of £18.4m ($29m) for the year to June 2014 - despite last season's lack of silverware.

The London team has only once before turned a profit in the 10 years since it was acquired by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The club said a new TV broadcasting deal, as well as the sale of players such as Juan Mata, had boosted profits.
Chelsea are currently unbeaten at the top of the Premier League.

They also top their Champions League group.

In 2012, Chelsea reported a profit of £1.4m, its first under Mr Abramovich. The club then made a loss in 2013.

This year's profits mean the club satisfies the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules imposed by Uefa, European football's governing body.

Under FFP, clubs need to balance football-related expenditure - transfers and wages - with television and ticket income, plus revenues raised by their commercial departments.Money spent on stadiums, training facilities, youth development or community projects is exempt.Bruce Buck, Chelsea's chairman, said the club's focus was first and foremost on the team's performance.
"By reaching the Champions League semi-final and maintaining a challenge in the Premier League until the final week of the season we demonstrated that, while improving our financial figures, we remained competitive in football's toughest club competitions," he said.
___________________________________________This is a great news even though profit is small . It is super positive sign !! I have few things to say .

  1. If any of you remember how in 2003 everyone used to bash at Chelsea calling us cheaters and buying trophies with Russian oil money ? Also , how Chelsea will always live off his pocket and ruining football ? . Well , I hope they have read this article . Chelsea now buys and sells without any help from Roman and develops it is own players . Our academy is one of the best if not the best in the world right now and our youth academy players are one of the best in the world . Our Wage bill is lower than Arsenal and United ( btw these clubs used to moan a lot about how Chelsea were ruining football ) .

It took time . However, after patient 10 years of project , it is now a success and almost complete. It is entering to final phases and to becoming self sustainable profitable club. All thanks to our wonderful team , staff and Roman Abramovich who is passionate and believes in success of this project .

  1. Chelsea was a pioneer and now successful example to clubs like PSG , Monaco and CIty ( all though things are not going well for last two ) . It is an example to other future projects and projects that are not going well . How to do things right to break into top clubs .

  2. At last I strongly believe we need to also thank Jose Mourinho . For the first three years of laying foundation of solid team with great players that last until 2012 and only needed few buys here and there to keep it going . He deserves just as much and maybe even more credit as any other staff in our club . And even now he came back and made some fantastic transfer business that resulted in this profit .

Not only Chelsea benefits from having such a extraordinary dedicated manager but EPL and media as well . He brings attention of the world . Sales went up in everything and his presence is all over positive . He is like commodity to our club and EPL , media and England as well because he shows so much support to national team .

We are lucky to have him as our manager and I am sure he knows that he is lucky to have club like Chelsea with such loyal support from staff and fans .

  1. There are more things coming up like new shirt deal, new sponsors and new stadium or expansions and etc. All well and positive . Big things are coming and it is good times to be Chelsea fan .

If only Perez could be like this...

Great news by the way. Congrats. Chelsea will soon no longer need Abramovich and his money. They will be an extremely successful self-sustaining business.

@dyna

I think two or three more years and project should be fully complete . If Chelsea win treble , we may complete it ahead of it's schedule .

Love them or hate them, you gotta admit Chelsea and Abramovich have given a hell of a business model. This looks healthy and fair. Chelsea was bashed at first (rightly so) but they have proven to be successful when taking a wealthy investment and change it into a sustainable business, more importantly a respected football club.

Great work has been done there, After United domination, Chelsea has become the lokomotive of PL, the team that fixes the competition level there.
Its good for every club there to have a leader club in Chelsea form, to bring the competition in higher levels, other teams like Arsenal, United and City will have some work to do but i believe they would be there next seasons.

Great management should be followed now by consistence in the pitch, Chelsea have a great fan base in the world and able to earn money without exterior finances. Its up now to the players and the coach to write History, since everything is alright outside the pitch.

But for the treble guys its not done yet :), many Clubs in Europe looks at least as healthy, strong and motivated as Chelsea so the CL win will not be granted, sometimes you need to be lucky there and nobody could control the luck factor.

Glad that we made a profit without earning prize money for winning any competition.

I won't be upset with winning EPL and another domestic cup this season with addition of good run in CL. And if we go unbeaten in EPL then I am ready to sacrifices all the rest of the cups .

@Tuan, I couldn't disagree more. One season of profits doesn't mean it is a sustainable business model. They made some astute transfer dealings that led to this profit. but that does not necessarily mean they soon won't need Abramovich. I am not saying it is not a step in the right direction, but they still need massive sources of revenue to even be compared to clubs like United or Arsenal in terms of financial efficiency.
