Carlos Tevez: Manchester City & Juventus agree £12m deal

Manchester City and Juventus have agreed a deal for striker Carlos Tevez to join the Italian side in a transfer worth up to £12m. City accepted an offer of £10m that could rise by £2m with add-ons. The Argentina international, 29, is expected in Italy on Wednesday for a medical and to discuss personal terms over a proposed three-year contract. When the fee is combined with wages and bonuses due to Tevez in the final year of his contract, City could save £27m. The two clubs reached an agreement at a meeting in London on Tuesday.

Tevez signed a five-year contract when he joined the Sky Blues in 2009 after previously playing for Manchester United. City paid his advisors - who owned his contract - a reported £25.5m fee, although some have claimed the figure was £47m. He has made 148 appearances for the club, scoring 74 goals, but the relationship with former manager Roberto Mancini soured in 2011 when he was fined and suspended following an incident in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. City must now search for a replacement but have said they will not pay the £53m asking price for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani.

This leaves us with only two senior strikers + Guidetti. We will have to get another striker for sure. Cavani already seems to be ruled out. I wonder who it will be.

I hope its either Jovetic or Lamela

@Fru_toot

His poor attitude and ridiculous wages resulted in him being sold.

But yea, great signing by Juve. It'll help them score all those chances they regret missing against Bayern. Say what you will, Juve are the second-best team in the world right now. They lost to Bayern 4-0, but didn't play with quite a bit of their starting XI. And that was also when Bayern had their best run of form as well. Tevez will hopefully bring back an attacking threat to the Bianconeri.

@Dynast: I normally agree with 99% of your opinion, but I can't get past the Juve being the second-best team in the world comment. C'mon man. :p

@Lodatz

Who WOULD you consider second-best? Manchester United? I'm okay with that. They ARE really good, but I'm not convinced that they're the same without Sir Alex. It was Sir Alex who got them this far in the first place.

City? Failed to get out of their CL group stage for two years in a row. Came behind Ajax this time too.

Barcelona? Got thrashed by Bayern and convincingly beaten by Madrid.

Dortmund? Lost their best player. When Gotze didn't play, Madrid beat them 2-0 and Bayern beat them 2-1. Just shows how much they rely on them.

Madrid? Nope. They have far too many issues on the pitch when Alonso is being marked. It's why they lost to Dortmund 4-1 and why United were on the verge of scoring a second before Nani was sent off.

Juve remains the only other candidate. The have quality in midfield and defense, not to mention an unbelievable goalkeeper. Antonio Conte is also a brilliant manager, and they're well on their way to win a third consecutive Serie A title. Tevez and Llorente are bound to assist them even more, and they already look like the second-best on Earth. What's wrong with that? Who WOULD you say to be the second-best?

@Dynastian, actually it was Alan Pardew that brought Tevez to where is he today :). Pardew was the first to introduce Tevez and Mascherano in the English games, and that's where SAF recognized Tevez's potential. However, Tevez didn't really perform as much as we wanted him to, which was why he moved to City. All credit goes to Alan Pardew.

@Dynast: I'd rate Barcelona, Madrid, United, Chelsea, Bayern and BVB all above Juventus.

Tevez is a good signing for them, but it'll take more than him to turn that team into real contenders for European success. You can point to Juve beating Chelsea in this year's group phase as evidence, but that was also the result that Di Matteo was fired for, and was pretty one-off.

When Pirlo and Buffon finally can't hack it any longer (and Buffon has looked pretty suspect in the Confed Cup already), then Juve will have a lot of work to do to replace them, along with all the offensive deficiencies they have.

@Lodatz

Yes, they may have tied Chelsea 2-2 at first, but it took a lucky deflection and a sublime piece of skill from Oscar for Chelsea to even get those two goals. And when they played the return leg, Juve won 3-0 convincingly. They also beat Celtic 5-0 on aggregate. If you take it the other way around, Barcelona would've tied them 3-3 on aggregate (whom you consider to be better than Juve).

Again, Juve only lost 4-0 to Bayern. This is nothing compared to Barcelona's 7-0 harassment. Undoubtedly Juve are a more capable team than Barcelona, and probably Dortmund too. Madrid I don't know, because they can be brilliant one day and awful the next, and I'm pretty sure United can give them a run for their money, but I still strongly believe that Juve are second-best.

But yes, you are very much correct when you say that they won't be at the top for long. Pirlo and Buffon are far too old to be running the team. You need younger players, like Busquets and Messi, or Schweinsteiger and Ribery.

@Dynast: I think that beating Celtic 5-0 over two legs is not quite the achievement that you may do... ;)

Also, didn't Arsenal get 3-3 on aggregate with Bayern? Doesn't that mean that Arsenal are better than Juve, by a mile? Of course not. ;)

I would expect Barcelona to have demolished Juve quite comprehensively, as they did to Milan, and I can see United doing the same thing. I'd put the Top 3 clubs in the world at: Bayern, Barcelona and United (in order), and all 3 of them could smash Juve into smithereens. I'd also put money on Madrid, BVB and Chelsea beating them too, though not quite as convincingly, in a knock-out situation. As I said, regarding the 3-0 against Chelsea, that was one result, and was so poor for Chelsea that Di Matteo was sacked for it.

I also wouldn't be too surprised to see Arsenal or City beating them, too. I think you're giving Juve too much credit for having won the weakest group, and then thrashing Celtic (who would be mid-table in the PL). We'll see, next year, but I wouldn't put money on them beating any of the Big Boys...

@Lodatz Juventus are probably not the second best team atm, but i disagree with the comment stating they would get demolished by barcelona, barca were not very convincing this year, even though they demolished milan, they were severely outplayed in the first leg. That would of never of happened to Pep's Barcelona. As for United, i think they are on par- its hard to tell- i watch A LOT of both the epl and serie a and they both are great teams. I think juve are probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the world. (behind bayern, barca, dortmund/manu)

@Lodatz

Fair enough, but I think that United can beat Barcelona. I'd place my money on the top three being.

  1. Bayern
  2. United
  3. Barcelona

If Madrid are capable of doing it over and over again, I think United can watch some of their games and beat Barcelona as well. I mean, Sir Alex would've beaten Mourinho if not for the red card.
