Messi has good acceleration. That's why he has this bursts or genius runs because he's so explosive when he starts dribbling the ball but he can't run consistently.  

Who said messi isn't fast? He is an excellent runner; he just doesn't do tests like Ronaldo.

Messi has decent pace, but he doesn't run long distances as oppose to Ronaldo (I'm emphasizing as appose to *RONALDO*)
The reason he seems fast is his acceleration and the explosive footwork following.
