Just to be pedantic, Dynast, yes Messi has scored 7 goals in 7 games. However, 4 of them were in a single game, against the team (from the Top 4) who have the worst defense.

Personally, I know Messi would excel in the PL (perhaps not score 50+ a season, but certainly around the 40 mark), but just wanted to put a little perspective on that stat. Without those 4 goals, It's actually been only 3 goals in 6 games. ;)

@Lodatz

Indeed, but it is not an excuse to prove your theory. Messi scored 4 goals against one of the top teams in England, whether you like it or not. It's not Messi's problem that Arsenal have a horrible defense. In fact, Arsenal last season have had the second best defense in all of EPL. All this proves is that Messi can take advantage of poor defenses and score lots of goals against them, whether they be German, Spanish, or English. If you take away Messi's 4 goals against Arsenal, all you're doing is winning a false victory in this debate by taking out his most successful game.

I'm not actually on the 'other side', here. I'm just pointing out that the stat you're raising is nowhere near ass slam-dunk as you think it is. In fact, take away one magical night, and bringing that stat up actually hurts your argument.

That's all.

@expert: Have you been living under a rock!? Mata is one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe! Top 5!

@Lodatz

No it does not. The question was, can Lionel Messi score as many goals against English opposition as he does in Spain, and that's exactly what I put (since 2009 of course). Arsenal is an English team, and a good one too. I see no harm in bringing up his 4 goal night.

@dynastian you said it yourself, the EPL overall level is higher than la liga because of a better financial balance between small and big clubs (to an extent). Messi would still score lots of goals and be ballon d'or but he certainly wouldn't score as many goals as he does in la liga.

@Dynast: What KingHenry said.

My point about the stat you're raising is that it conjurs up this idea that he scored constantly in all the games (7 out of 7) etc, when he didn't. If over half of those goals take place in a single game, it's not indicative of an overall trend, and indeed, when removing the anomaly (the result which bucks the trend) the trend is only 3 goals in 6 games, which is an enormous difference in terms of ratio.

It'd be like someone throwing darts, and getting 54, 66, 47, 64, 158, and 59, and then saying that the offset the 158 makes should count as the 'norm'. It's a statistical anomaly, as shown by how utterly different the ratio is in the event of its removal.

He played 6 games against top English teams and in one of those six games he had a magical night. If he was in the EPL there is a very high chance he would have that "magical" night every 6 games or less games against those weaker teams, along with his other very consistent games. He would bag up a lot more goals than games for sure. Like Lodatz said probably 40+ per season in the league and IMO he can reach 50 depending on his form and team.
