DYNASTIAN how could you list these players in this order?! Dude, you're just so, ugghhh, I hate you dude. (Standard footyroom etiquette)
Just kidding. Nice work on this list. Now if you were to make a top 10 list of Real Madrid players, would Figo be in it too? :P
I'd like to say that I made this list based on my opinion. Naturally, you are welcome to disagree. That's what makes us human. If you disagree with an opinion, please try to mention it politely in the comments below. Other than that, I hope you enjoy the list I have made.
10. Luis Figo
Years spent at Barcelona: 5
Trophies with Barcelona: 7
Appearances: 249
Goals: 45
Barcelona supporters don’t have the fondest of memories of Luis Figo. The Portuguese legend spent 5 years at the club, and amassed a total of 7 major titles with them, but his departure to Real Madrid in 2000 left the fans of the Blaugranas heartbroken. Their hatred stemmed mostly from the immense success and promise Figo had shown at Barca, and his departure to Madrid tore down his legacy at the Camp Nou. Figo had an immense talent on the ball, and could swerve in and out through defenses with ease, and pick out a pass immediately. He was, the “Portuguese superstar” before Cristiano Ronaldo. The impact of his departure was heavily felt, as Barcelona failed to win any titles in the 2 years following Figo’s transfer. Luis Figo was, indeed, one of the greatest players to ever play for Barcelona, and possibly the most underrated as well.
9. Carles Puyol
Years spent at Barcelona: 14
Trophies with Barcelona: 21
Appearances: 590
Goals: 16
The captain of the current Barca squad, Puyol has amassed a total of 21 major trophies at FC Barcelona, leaving behind a legacy for many generations to remember. Puyol was never the most talented of defenders. In fact, his era included a surprising amount of players who can be said to have been a better tackler of the ball than Puyol (Maldini, Nesta, Silva, Terry, Vidic, Rio). But Puyol’s immense character was what led him to impeccable success at the club. His never-say-die attitude, and leadership capabilities, has helped him establish himself as one of Barca’s greatest ever defenders.
8. Michael Laudrup
Years spent at Barcelona: 5
Trophies with Barcelona: 9
Appearances: 216
Goals: 55
Michael Laudrup is noted to have been one of the greatest players to have ever played… and yet he hasn’t won a
single individual award for being the “best”. Nevertheless, he picked up 9 titles with Barcelona in 5 years, and established himself as one of the stars of Cruyff’s “Dream Team”. Laudrup, like Figo, had made a controversial transfer to Real Madrid, although his departure took place 6 years prior to Figo’s departure. In fact, Luis Figo was bought in an attempt to revive the bit of magic Barcelona had lost after Laudrup’s departure. Michel Platini had been noted to say, “Michael had everything except for one thing: he wasn’t selfish enough”. Laudrup’s close control of the ball and incredible vision is what Andres Iniesta has based his game on. Iniesta himself had once said, “Who is the best player in history? Laudrup”.
7. Josep Guardiola
Years spent at Barcelona: 14 (10 as player, 4 as manager)
Trophies with Barcelona: 30 (16 as player, 14 as manager)
Appearances: 346
Goals: 10
Josep Guardiola had spent a decade at Barcelona, but his legacy stems more from his managing ability than his playing ability. As a player, Guardiola was noted to have incredible vision and positioning as a defensive midfielder, and had immense leadership capabilities as well, as his role as Barcelona’s captain played an important role in Barca picking up 16 trophies with him in the starting XI. Guardiola was, however, a disciple of Cruyff, and Cruyff had encouraged him to give the manager role a shot. It was a tremendous success. Guardiola became the manager of Barcelona in 2008, and in 2009 he had completed the sextuple (winning all 6 trophies a top European club can compete for). As the first manager to win “everything”, Guardiola went on to win 8 more trophies in the following 3 years. Just to put his success into numbers, in Barcelona’s 114 years of history, the club has won 71 major trophies, with Guardiola winning 30 of those. Nearly half of those trophies were due to Guardiola’s immense talent as both a player and a manager.
6. Laszlo Kubala
Years spent at Barcelona: 10
Trophies with Barcelona: 14
Appearances: 256
Goals: 194
Not much is known about Laszlo Kubala in modern times. The Hungarian Revolution forced him out of his country
in 1951, and he left for Spain. Eventually coming to Barcelona, Kubala showed once again why Hungary has had one of the greatest teams world football has ever seen. He scored 26 goals in 19 games in his first season in La Liga, and that included a 7 goal haul against Sporting Gijon, which remains a La Liga record for most goals in a single match. Kubala won 14 titles with Barcelona in 10 years, and scored 194 goals for them along the way, which made him their second-highest scorer at the time. Kubala was noted to have terrific speed and a ferocious shot, along with deadly set-piece accuracy.
5. Andres Iniesta
Years spent at Barcelona: 11
Trophies with Barcelona: 21
Appearances: 483
Goals: 48
Andres Iniesta has had more success with club and country than most players can dream of. With Spain, Iniesta won the World Cup in 2010, and two EURO’s in 2008 and 2012, and formed one of the greatest teams in history alongside legends such as Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Xabi Alonso, Iker Casillas, and David Villa. The 29 year-old has picked up 21 trophies in 11 years with the club (nearly 2 trophies per season). Blessed with magnificent dribbling skills, Iniesta is famed for being a picture-perfect replica of Michael Laudrup, except with more trophies in his cabinet. With his ability to glide past players with ease, pick out a brilliant pass, and score important goals at important times, Andres Iniesta will go down as one of the greatest midfielders the world has seen.
4. Xavi Hernandez
Years spent at Barcelona: 15
Trophies with Barcelona: 22
Appearances: 703
Goals: 82
Another legend of the 2008-2011 Barcelona squad, Xavi Hernandez has won everything Iniesta and Puyol have won (1 more trophy than both of them). The 34 year-old may be losing his edge and his position in Barca’s starting lineup, but his legacy has not dimmed. 2 EURO’s, 1 World Cup, 3 Champions Leagues, 7 La Ligas, and 2 Copa del Reys have somehow managed to fit themselves inside Xavi’s magnificent trophy cabinet. His immense play-making ability and positioning have made him one of the best midfielders of his generation, but he will soon be eclipsed by the younger Andres Iniesta.
3. Ronaldinho
Years spent at Barcelona: 5
Trophies with Barcelona: 5
Appearances: 207
Goals: 94
Assists: 81
Ronaldinho was infamous for not living up to his potential, but when he was in his prime, he was a joy to watch. Ronaldinho was extremely talented in all areas of the offense, and was one of the most unpredictable players to grace the game. His ridiculous flair and dribbling ability led him to win a World Cup with Brazil, and he helped Barcelona to 5 titles in his 5 year stay at the Camp Nou. Ronaldinho may not have established himself as one of the world’s greatest, but his stay at the top was untouchable. No one even came close to Ronaldinho in his prime. Not Ronaldo, not Messi, not Henry, no one. At his prime, Ronaldinho outshone every legend that had played in his time. He may not have had all the success that other players have enjoyed with Barca, but his attractive style of football had left many mesmerized, and a large number of modern young Culés state Ronaldinho as their main reason for supporting Barcelona in the first place. His legacy on world football may not have been so everlasting, but he certainly left his mark on Barcelona, and the fans who had been blessed to see him play live.
2. Lionel Messi
Years spent at Barcelona: 9
Trophies with Barcelona: 20
Appearances: 401
Goals: 331
Lionel Messi, as a 26 year-old, has already established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. His diminutive height and low center of gravity lead him to ease his way through defenders with immense pace, and either lay off a slick pass or to shoot and score a magnificent goal. Messi has won 20 trophies in his 9 years at Barcelona (more than 2 per season), and is Barca’s highest ever goalscorer with 331 goals at the present moment (nearly 100 more than 2nd place Cesar Rodriguez). Leo Messi has also scored more than 30 goals in a season for the last 5 seasons for Barcelona, and looks to be on his way to make it 6 seasons in a row. Where 30 goals in a season is a milestone for a talented striker, Leo Messi shatters that level of expectation with 73 goals in the 2011-12 season. Where 40 goals is the landmark of how much a talented striker is expected to score in a calendar year, Messi breaks that with 91 goals. His immense ability on the ball makes him absolutely unstoppable, and he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the following decade.
1. Johan Cruyff
Years spent at Barcelona: 13 (5 as player, 8 as manager)
Trophies with Barcelona: 13 (2 as player, 11 as manager)
Appearances: 174
Goals: 61
Johan Cruyff has been the greatest ever person to be associated with football. He was the one who popularized “Total Football”, which is the style of football played today. Back in his time, players were always restricted to their position. A right back will always remain a right back, and will always stay beside the center back and behind the right winger. But Cruyff’s philosophy involved players moving dynamically, enabling players to switch positions to make attacking and defending much easier. If a right back charged up the pitch to play in the zone of a right winger, the right midfielder will drop back to defend as a right back. This philosophy is now used in every club and country, and Cruyff and Michels are the ones responsible to change football forever. Johan Cruyff had only managed 2 trophies with Barcelona as a player, but his immense ability to do just about everything on the pitch was what left the crowd wanting more. His return as a manager was very successful, as he won 11 trophies, and was Barca’s most successful manager until Josep Guardiola surpassed him in 2012. Cruyff’s philosophy had also involved using youth players from the youth squad rather than to spend millions on foreign players. This, along-side with his “tiki-taka” possession-based football, has resulted in the emergence of players such as Guardiola, Puyol, Pique, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Pedro, Alba, Valdes, Busquets, and many more. His philosophy has also been the foundation of the immense success of the Spanish national team as well, which goes to show just why Cruyff is regarded to be the greatest footballer in history.
