UEFA releases statement on Álvarez's disallowed penalty against Real Madrid
The UEFA has issued a statement regarding the disallowed penalty of Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez during the penalty shootout in the Champions League Round of 16 match against Real Madrid (1-0, 2-4 on penalties). The Argentine scored against Los Blancos, but the goal was disallowed due to a double touch during the penalty kick.
"Atlético Madrid contacted UEFA seeking clarification about the incident that resulted in the cancellation of Julián Álvarez's penalty goal near the end of yesterday's UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Although the contact was minimal, the player touched the ball with his standing foot prior to kicking it, as shown in the attached video clip. According to the current regulation (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), VAR was required to inform the referee that the goal must be disallowed. UEFA will initiate discussions with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where the double touch is clearly unintentional," UEFA stated.
