Tottenham Is Better Than It Seems: Proof Was Clear Even Before the Match Against City

Tottenham started the season on a mixed note: they beat City, Aston Villa, and Manchester United. Still, they lost three of their last five matches (including a surprising defeat to Ipswich). Yesterday, they again dominated City with a stunning 4-0 win. These ups and downs reflect the team's state: Spurs can win or lose against anyone. Ange Postecoglou is criticized for sticking to an ultra-attacking style regardless of the circumstances. But is this criticism fair?

In reality, Tottenham has every right to complain about bad luck. While they currently sit sixth in the league table, they rank fourth by expected points. Their daring style yields results: no team has scored more goals than Postecoglou's side (27 goals, averaging over two per match!). Despite the offensive focus, their defense isn’t collapsing — they rank fifth for the fewest goals conceded. Visually, the team looks solid:

  • The Australian coach has instilled intense pressing.
  • The players work hard.
  • They take plenty of shots on goal.

The main issue has been maintaining consistency throughout matches. Tottenham often displays a few powerful bursts of performance but then runs out of steam, cedes control, and drops points. Injuries have also contributed to their struggles.

However, by all metrics, better results are on the horizon. Opponents can only sometimes capitalize on Spurs' mistakes and turn games around. Son Heung-min has already returned from injury and provided assistance against City. Mickey van de Ven is expected back soon. With time, the pressing will become more pragmatic and refined.

The key is to stay committed to their signature style. Regression to the mean will likely work in their favor, allowing Tottenham to climb the table and compete for a Champions League spot — they already deserve it based on their current performances.
