Football is not the first thing you think of when you hear about South Africa. Things like Rugby Union and people like Trevor Noah probably come to mind. But South Africa has a bustling soccer scene with quite a few successful teams in its top-tier football league.

5.SuperSport United
SuperSport United is a prominent football club based in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital and fourth largest city. The team was founded in 1994, and since then, it won three titles in the Premier Soccer League.
SuperSport is famous for its youth academy, which is considered the best in South Africa. It has given the country’s soccer fans many idols to follow, including Kermit Erasmus and Kamohelo Mokotjo.
4.Cape Town City FC
While Cape Town City FC doesn’t have any league titles to flaunt, it did win the Telkom Knockout once and the MTN 8 twice. It is a young team founded in 2016, which makes this an admirable performance.
Its derbies against the Cape Town Spurs and SuperSport United are followed by its passionate fan base in Cape Town and beyond.
3.Kaizer Chiefs
Not to be mistaken for the English rock band, the Kaizer Chiefs is one of the most iconic football clubs in South Africa. Founded in 1970, the Chiefs have a distinctive gold and black kit and play their home games in Soccer City (FNB Stadium), Africa's largest stadium with nearly 95,000 seats.
The team has the biggest fan base in South Africa - more than 16 million official fans - and four Premier Soccer League titles under their belt. On top of that, they have 13 National Cup and League Cup victories, both of them record-breaking numbers.
2.Orlando Pirates
Another South African team with a long history, the Orlando Pirates, based in Orlando, Soweto, was founded in 1937. It is the oldest football club in the country and a true success story, going from some boys playing barefoot and without a kit to one of the most successful South African soccer teams.
The Orlando Pirates and the Kaiser Chiefs are fierce rivals: the Soweto Derby has been ongoing since 1970.
1.Mamelodi Sundowns
Also known as the “Brazilians”, the Mamelodi Sundowns are the most prominent football club in South Africa. Founded in 1970, the club has adopted an entertaining, attacking play style since its inception.
The Sundowns are the most successful club in the Premier Soccer League, having won the title a record 13 times, and it performed very well on a continental level, too. It is the most valuable South African football club and won the inaugural edition of the African Football League this year.
