Thailand vs Vietnam Prediction: What to Expect From the ASEAN Championship Final
Thailand and Vietnam meet at Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Championship final. It is a familiar rivalry at this stage of Southeast Asian football, but this time Vietnam arrive in Bangkok looking like the more convincing side. Kim Sang-sik's team have gone through the tournament without a defeat and were particularly impressive in the semi-finals against Malaysia, winning both matches 2-0. Thailand had a much more complicated tie against Singapore and conceded three times across the two legs. Recent history also favours the visitors: Vietnam beat Thailand in both matches of the 2024 final, including a 3-2 victory at Rajamangala.

All of that makes Vietnam an attractive option, but the format of the final changes the way we look at Saturday's match. There are another 90 minutes to play in Vietnam on August 26, so neither team needs to settle the tie in Bangkok. Thailand cannot afford to leave too much space behind against Xuan Son and a Vietnamese attack that has been ruthless when opponents have been forced to open up. Vietnam have even less reason to take unnecessary risks. A draw in Bangkok would leave them in an excellent position before the return leg at home, and we could see long periods where the visitors are perfectly happy to defend compactly and wait for Thailand to make the first mistake.

For that reason, under 2.5 goals is our main prediction. It may look slightly strange considering the attacking quality of both teams, but the first leg of a final can produce a very different game from what the tournament statistics suggest. Thailand should have periods of possession and the Rajamangala crowd will expect them to push forward, but throwing numbers into attack from the opening minutes would be dangerous. Vietnam showed against Malaysia that they do not need an open match to get the job done. They were patient, protected their advantage and waited for the right moments to attack. A similar approach would make plenty of sense here.

There are other ways to approach the match. Vietnam or draw (X2) looks like the strongest result-based option given their current form, while an outright Vietnam victory offers more risk but also has a clear argument behind it. If the visitors score first, Thailand will eventually have to open the game and that is exactly when Vietnam can become particularly dangerous. A half-time draw is another interesting possibility if both coaches treat the opening 45 minutes cautiously. On the other hand, Thailand should not be dismissed simply because Vietnam have looked better during the tournament. They are at home, they know how to handle matches of this magnitude and a narrow 1-0 victory built around one set piece or one defensive mistake would hardly be a shock.

Our preferred scores are 0-0, 1-0, 0-1 and 1-1, all of which fit the expectation of a tight first leg where avoiding a major mistake matters almost as much as winning. If the game unexpectedly becomes open, we would favour Vietnam because of the way they have been playing and the options they have in attack. But with the second leg still to come, the more likely picture is a controlled match with relatively few clear chances.

FootyRoom prediction: Under 2.5 goals. @ 1.6

Alternative options: Vietnam or draw (X2), draw at half-time, Vietnam to win, correct score 1-1 or 0-1.
