Southgate Explained the Exclusion of Maddison, Grealish, & Maguire from the England Squad
England's head coach Gareth Southgate explained the exclusion of James Maddison, Jack Grealish, and Harry Maguire from the squad for Euro 2024.
"All the players understood these decisions. Of course, all players believe they should be in the team, which is why they are considered top players. They have self-belief and the right mindset, but we have several players who have performed very well in the league throughout the season. We understood that other players had stronger seasons than Grealish and Maddison, especially in the second half of the season.
Trent can play in defense, so I think we have 9 defenders. This was one of the reasons we couldn't take Maguire - he would have been the tenth, and then the balance would be disrupted. Harry has made some progress, but his situation was challenging, and he likely would not have been available for the group stage due to injury," the specialist's words are quoted by BBC Sport.
England's first match at Euro 2024 will be against Serbia on June 16.
