Singapore and Thailand meet at Jalan Besar Stadium on August 15 in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Championship semi-finals. Eleven regional titles between them underline the pedigree of the two nations, but it is seven-time champions Thailand who arrive in Singapore as favourites after producing a perfect group-stage campaign.

Singapore have already given their supporters plenty to celebrate at this tournament. Gavin Lee's side finished second in Group A with eight points, going through the entire group stage unbeaten with two wins and two draws.
The Lions began their campaign with back-to-back victories before holding defending champions Vietnam to a goalless draw. Their place in the semi-finals was eventually secured in a tense final group game against Indonesia. Ragnar Oratmangoen put the visitors ahead shortly after half-time, but Ilhan Fandi equalised in the 66th minute to earn Singapore the 1-1 draw they needed to progress.
That resilience has been one of Singapore's biggest strengths. The Lions may not possess the same individual quality as Thailand, but they have proved difficult to beat and have already shown they can compete with the tournament's strongest teams.
Ilhan Fandi will once again be one of the hosts' main attacking threats, while playing the first leg at Jalan Besar should provide Singapore with an additional boost. Tickets for the semi-final sold out quickly, meaning Thailand can expect a hostile atmosphere on Saturday night.
Thailand
If Singapore's progress has been impressive, Thailand's has been almost flawless.
Anthony Hudson's team finished top of Group B after winning all four matches, scoring ten goals without conceding a single one. They are the only team in the competition yet to concede and enter the knockout stage with arguably the strongest defensive record of any of the four remaining sides.
Thailand secured first place with a professional 2-0 victory over Myanmar in Bangkok. Two penalties, converted by Worachit Kanitsribumphen and Jehhanafee Mamah, completed a perfect group stage and sent the seven-time champions into the semi-finals for a record 14th time.
Perhaps even more encouraging for Hudson is the manner in which Thailand have managed their campaign. The War Elephants have not needed to play at maximum intensity for long periods, yet have remained extremely efficient at both ends of the pitch.
The numbers speak for themselves: four matches, four victories, ten goals scored and none conceded. With the second leg taking place in Bangkok only three days later, Thailand have little reason to turn Saturday's game into an end-to-end contest. Control, patience and defensive discipline are likely to be just as important as attacking ambition.

Singapore deserve respect after an unbeaten group stage, particularly after taking points from both Vietnam and Indonesia. At Jalan Besar, the Lions should once again be competitive, but Thailand represent a considerably more difficult test.
The War Elephants have been the most convincing team in the tournament so far. Four consecutive victories and four clean sheets are difficult to ignore, while their excellent historical record against Singapore only strengthens the case for an away win.
At the same time, this is a two-legged semi-final. Thailand do not need to chase a huge victory in Singapore, especially with the return match in Bangkok coming just three days later. Hudson's side have shown that they are perfectly comfortable controlling games and protecting a lead rather than turning matches into shootouts.
That combination makes a Thailand victory in a relatively low-scoring contest the most attractive option. Singapore have enough defensive organisation to prevent the game from becoming one-sided, but Thailand's superior quality and remarkable defensive form should eventually make the difference.
A 0-1 or 0-2 away victory looks like the most realistic scenario.
