Scores stunning goals, chills in favelas, and inspires tattoos: How Memphis Depay is making an impact in Brazil

In the summer of 2024, the Dutchman’s contract with Atletico Madrid ended. After a decent showing at EURO 2024, many expected the forward to join a mid-level European club or head to Turkey or Saudi Arabia. But Depay had other plans, opting for an unexpected move to Brazilian side Corinthians — and it’s paying off big time.

First, the salary is fantastic — €500,000 per month, making him the highest-paid player in Brazil. However, in October, rumors surfaced about payment issues. The club's local betting company sponsor was responsible for his wages. Still, its license had recently been revoked by authorities. Thankfully, the problems were resolved, and Depay continues to play without disruptions.

Secondly, he’s been given the role he loves most — a false nine. The results? Eleven league matches with 7 goals and 1 assist, including five game-winners. Not only is he scoring, but the goals are spectacular. Depay has netted two stunning free kicks, one long-range strike, and an overhead bicycle kick.

Lastly, he’s embraced São Paulo’s vibrant atmosphere. Videos of him hanging out in favelas with locals, dancing, and taking pictures have gone viral. He’s also been spotted attending samba events and collaborating with Brazilian rappers.

Brazil seems to be the perfect fit for Depay, and he’s clearly won over the locals — some fans have even gotten tattoos on his face!
