"Ronaldo disgraces our country": Saudi Arabia furious over Cristiano's behavior
The legendary Portuguese player faces suspension.
Ronaldo continues to frantically struggle within the confines of his own greatness. Just when it seemed the soon-to-be 40-year-old Cristiano had finally calmed down, leaving behind his EURO 2024 tantrums, meltdowns due to fan chants honoring Messi, and other questionable behaviors unbefitting a seasoned professional. But no, the passion within the Portuguese icon still boils, as evidenced in the match against Al-Ettifaq.
Understandably so: Al Nassr's 2.5-month unbeaten streak had both Cristiano and the fans dreaming of the coveted championship. Those dreams were crushed by... Russian referee Kirill Levnikov. Or perhaps John Duran, the $90 million newcomer of the "great club," who decided to slap an Al-Ettifaq player, earning a red card in the 90+2 minute when the score was 2-3 against Al Nassr.
Cristiano, at least, blamed the Russian referee, furiously kicking the ball into the stands before confronting the fourth officials — yet somehow avoided any immediate punishment, surprising everyone.
However, Ronaldo faces more serious sanctions — from the sheikhs who own Al Nassr. According to Saudi media, they are considering two options: fining the player or suspending him for several games. Local fans were also seriously angered by Ronaldo’s actions.
- "His behavior is immoral. Such a person disgraces our country."
- "This is the result of favoritism in our sports system. He gets away with everything."
- "A spoiled old man who thinks he's a king."
And it seems the anger of the fans may be a far harsher punishment for Cristiano than losing a few thousand dollars, considering the colossal size of the Portuguese star’s ego. Although, frankly, a suspension seems unlikely.
