Record-Breaking Salah and Man City’s Disaster: A Thrilling Weekend in Europe

Mohamed Salah, with a brace against Southampton, has equaled the Premier League record for goal contributions in a season.

Manchester City suffered another defeat. And to whom? Their direct competitor for a top-three finish and a Champions League spot – Nottingham Forest.

Slipping to Fifth

City were just seven minutes away from securing a draw. To make things worse for Guardiola, Chelsea defeated Leicester, pushing the Citizens down to fifth place – a Europa League spot. Brighton is now breathing down their necks.

Meanwhile, Liverpool is storming towards the title, and only a miracle can stop them. Their rivals keep dropping points – Arsenal and Manchester United played to a draw, further solidifying Liverpool’s 15-point lead.

And how can you lose when you have Mohamed Salah in your squad? He is chasing the Premier League record for goal contributions in a season. With 44 in 29 matches, he has equaled the best-ever tally in a 38-game season. Only Alan Shearer and Andy Cole have more – 47, but in a 42-game season.

Title Race on Hold

The La Liga title race is getting tighter. Just one point separates the three leading contenders. Atlético Madrid failed to beat Getafe away, conceding a stoppage-time winner. Mauro Arambarri’s brace played right into the hands of both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Real Madrid’s biggest stars stepped up when needed – Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius secured a win over Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona’s match against Osasuna was postponed due to tragic circumstances. Club doctor Carles Miñarro García passed away before the game, and the Catalan players requested a postponement. La Liga agreed, offering condolences to his family. Real Madrid and several other clubs also expressed their sympathies.

Milan’s Comeback Spirit

In Serie A, both Milan teams pulled off identical comeback victories. And in remarkably similar fashion. By the 60th minute in Lecce, Milan seemed destined for a fourth straight defeat. But the Rossoneri turned things around, with Christian Pulisic netting a brace to seal the win. Milan even scored twice more, but both goals were ruled out. The victory felt like justice served.

Just a few hours later, Inter produced their own magic at the San Siro. Monza had taken a 2-0 lead, but Marco Arnautović and Hakan Çalhanoğlu led Inter’s charge to equalize, before an own goal secured the Nerazzurri’s triumph.

Meanwhile, Napoli also won their game, while a crucial clash between Atalanta and Juventus – third and fourth in the table – ended in a deadlock.

Clear Leaders and Shock Defeats

In France, the title race is all but decided. PSG are showcasing their dominance, with a 16-point lead and just nine rounds left.

The championship is nearly secured, especially after Marseille lost to Lens. Monaco, also dropped points, drawing with Toulouse and slipping out of the top three.

In the Bundesliga, the top three teams – Bayern, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund – all lost at home. According to Opta, the last time this happened in a single round was in the 2006/07 season.

Dortmund is struggling the most, sitting in 10th place and now just fighting for a European spot. The Europa Conference League looks like a consolation prize at best. But if they keep dropping points, they might miss out on European football altogether. In Round 25, they suffered a shocking home defeat to Augsburg.

Leverkusen’s loss was even more painful. They still hadn’t recovered from their Champions League thrashing by Bayern, falling to Werder Bremen.

And then there’s Bayern, chasing Leverkusen at the top. They threw away a two-goal lead by the 28th minute against Bochum. First, the visitors pulled one back, then Bayern went down to 10 men, and in the second half, they conceded twice more. A weekend to forget for Europe’s elite.
