Quincy Promes Extradited to the Netherlands After Criminal Convictions
The long-running criminal saga surrounding Dutch footballer Quincy Promes appears to be nearing its conclusion. According to De Telegraaf, the 32-year-old was extradited from the United Arab Emirates to the Netherlands on a private jet. Dutch prosecutors later confirmed the report, marking a significant development in a legal battle that has stretched over several years and involved multiple convictions.
The striker, who most recently played for second-division UAE side United Football Club, now faces prison time for two separate crimes committed in 2020 — an assault and a large-scale drug smuggling operation.
From Knife Attack to Drug Trafficking
Promes’ troubles began with an assault case in which he stabbed his cousin in the leg during a family gathering. In March 2022, as the case unfolded, investigators discovered evidence linking him to cocaine trafficking. A new investigation was launched in 2023, and the fallout has been swift.
Key Events in Quincy Promes’ Legal Timeline:
Date | Event |
---|---|
March 2022 | Charged with attempted manslaughter (stabbing); suspected of drug trade |
May 2023 | Formally charged with drug smuggling |
June 2023 | Sentenced for assault on cousin |
February 2024 | Convicted of drug trafficking; arrested in UAE airport after hit-and-run |
June 2025 | Extradited to the Netherlands |
Detained in Dubai, Then Extradited
Promes was with Russian club Spartak Moscow in Dubai for pre-season training when news broke of his second conviction. Surprisingly, he chose to remain in the UAE despite the extradition agreement between the two countries — a risky move, in hindsight.
He was initially detained in February 2024 after a hit-and-run traffic incident in Dubai, unrelated to his convictions in the Netherlands. He spent two months in a local jail before being released on bail but was barred from leaving the country. During that period, he signed with United Football Club in the UAE’s second tier.
A Combined Prison Term Looms
In the Netherlands, Promes received 1.5 years in prison for the stabbing incident and 6 years for drug trafficking. He attempted to delay his arrest by offering to return voluntarily once his appeal was heard, but the Amsterdam court rejected the proposal.
On June 12, Promes was arrested, and eight days later, he was placed on a flight back to the Netherlands.
The final length of his sentence is yet to be determined. An Amsterdam appellate court clarified that while Promes faces two convictions, Dutch law does not allow simply summing the maximum sentences. Instead, a single, combined sentence is handed down — and it could be harsher than previously assumed.
“For the stabbing alone, the maximum sentence is 20 years. For drug
trafficking, it's 12 years. While sentences aren’t added up in full,
the court may issue a combined ruling that exceeds the individual
maximums — but not the sum of both,” the court explained.
One thing is certain: prison time for Quincy Promes is now inevitable.
