Cristiano Ronaldo gave a wide-ranging press conference
"Never Say Never": Ronaldo on the Possibility of Playing with Messi at the Same Club

On the eve of the UEFA Nations League final in Munich, Cristiano Ronaldo gave a wide-ranging press conference, addressing everything from his future ambitions to reflections on Lionel Messi, as well as thoughts on generational change and the burden of leadership. At 40 years old, Ronaldo appeared calm, confident, and as passionate about football as ever.

Early on, he was asked about the upcoming final against Spain and the comparisons between himself and 17-year-old Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal. “We are two different generations — one is just starting, the other is finishing,” Ronaldo said. “It makes more sense to compare him with Vitinha. But I have no problem with it. The media always tries to create a rivalry. But this is about Portugal and Spain, not individuals. The team is what matters. I just want Portugal to play at a high level and win.”

He also acknowledged the quality of the opposition: “Spain might be the best team in the world right now.”

When asked whether he missed lifting trophies, Ronaldo admitted: “Yes, I do. But sometimes, there are seasons when you don’t win anything — that’s part of football. Tomorrow is the last opportunity this season. It will be a tough match, but anything is possible.”

One of the more engaging moments came when a journalist hinted at a question about Messi. Ronaldo smiled knowingly and interjected, “You want to ask me about Messi, right?” — prompting laughter from the press room. He then added, “Never say never, but it’s unlikely,” referring to the idea of playing at the same club as the Argentine.

However, he was clear about the mutual respect they share: “We’ve shared the stage for 15 years. I remember translating for him at awards ceremonies… He always treated me with respect, and I have the same for him.”

Ronaldo also addressed the Club World Cup set for 2025 in the United States, confirming that he will most likely not participate. “It’s almost decided. Even though there were offers, I probably won’t take part. I have to think short-, medium-, and long-term. It’s an interesting tournament, but very demanding. At my age, it’s important to manage my energy wisely.”

He also came to the defense of Portugal manager Roberto Martínez, who had recently faced media criticism. “Reaching a final speaks for itself. It’s strange to hear people doubting him. He’s done an excellent job. People underestimate how hard it is to coach a national team.”

As the press conference drew to a close, Ronaldo emphasized what truly matters: “Memories are part of life, but you have to live in the present. Tomorrow we play for a trophy. We’ve won the Nations League before — we want to do it again.”

Later that day, he posted on social media: “This is for us. This is for you. This is for Portugal. Tomorrow is the day we make history again.”
