Liverpool is Out of the Race for the Premier League Title
Klopp's team lost to Everton in the derby. Now, they have virtually no chance of winning any trophies this season.
Everton must not leave the EPL. The Premier League would lose a lot if it lost the Liverpool derby. Sean Dyche's team is having another tough season—regularly dropping points on and off the field due to FA decisions — but the match against Liverpool changed the mood among Everton fans.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions: Liverpool, with their star players in the lineup, seemed strangely absent on the field for the first 30 minutes. The referee awarded Everton a penalty in the 6th minute, but VAR intervened, finding an offside. Soon after, Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a great opportunity, which isn't surprising (he's the worst finisher in the Premier League this season according to xG). This unpredictability is what makes football so thrilling.
Still, Everton opened the scoring in the 27th minute. There was chaos in Liverpool's penalty area, and the ball ricocheted to Jermaine Branthwaite, who struck at goal. Alisson managed to touch the ball, but it hit the post and rolled into the net.
Only after Everton's goal did Liverpool wake up, showing their trademark resilience. This has been a trend for Jurgen Klopp's team this season. They lead the league in points gained after falling behind. Salah had a good chance, and Nunez had a splendid one. Jordan Pickford saved Everton in both halves. The England number one goalkeeper is the only one who can challenge Arsenal's David Raya for the Golden Glove (given for the most clean sheets in the Premier League). This display of determination is a testament to Liverpool's fighting spirit.
While Liverpool kept pushing (Salah had seven shots in the match), the hosts wasted time and cleared the ball far away, even when no one was there. In the 58th minute, Everton scored again. Calvert-Lewin, seemingly cursed this season, headed the ball into the net from the far post. If even he scores, it's hard to expect anything.
Liverpool undoubtedly played for more than 0 goals but couldn't score. Although Luis Diaz hit the post towards the end of the match. Klopp tried to change the game with substitutions, but it was too late. Everton showed one of their best performances of the season in terms of dedication and now seems likely to secure their place in the Premier League. Dyche's team is unlikely to lose an eight-point lead in four rounds. They are picking up points at the bottom of the table at such a rate that Everton will probably remain in the Premier League, even if they lose all remaining matches.
Liverpool's season is over. They're out of the League Cup, FA Cup, and Europa League. They're three points behind Arsenal (who will likely finish higher due to goal difference if equal) and five points behind City. It's doubtful that both of these clubs will stumble twice. It appears Klopp's final season at Liverpool will end without any trophies.
