Left and Got Better: Rashford Shines at Aston Villa to Spite United

Rashford is a Manchester United academy graduate, having spent 20 years in the club’s system. For the Red Devils' senior team, the forward played 426 matches, scored 138 goals, and provided 63 assists. During his time at United, he won numerous trophies, was twice named Player of the Season, and became the top scorer in both the EFL Cup and the Europa League. Marcus also earned high praise from global football experts, was regarded as one of England's top talents of the 2010s, and even received the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) award.

Despite his promising career, Rashford found himself exiled to Aston Villa. His transfer was a hot topic throughout the winter. Some doubted it, others debated its merits, and many declared his career over. But now, with Villa reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, plenty of experts have been left speechless.

Rashford has rebooted his career after a long absence. Before his February move to Unai Emery’s side, the forward hadn't played since December 2024. He had been sidelined by Manchester United's head coach, Rúben Amorim. Upon arriving in Birmingham, many predicted a slow recovery, a lengthy process of regaining form, and a gradual introduction into the squad — especially given his short loan spell. However, from his very first days, Rashford proved he was far from finished.

Averaging 45-50 minutes per match, he seamlessly adapted to the team’s style. In the game against Chelsea, he provided two assists in the second half alone. Villa defeated the Londoners 2-1, with the match’s best performers being two new signings — Marco Asensio, who bagged a brace, and Rashford himself.

He also impressed in the FA Cup, assisting Asensio once again in a match against Cardiff City. The Spaniard’s goal turned out to be the match-winner. In the Champions League, where Villa has now reached the quarter-finals, Rashford added another assist in the second leg against Club Brugge — once again setting up Asensio.

The incredible chemistry between these two newcomers is delivering results for Emery’s team. Naturally, it made perfect sense for Rashford to earn an England call-up for the first time since March 2024. National team coach Thomas Tuchel was impressed with the 27-year-old’s resurgence:

"I felt that he had a huge impact on Aston Villa, mainly coming off the bench. His influence was impressive. His physical presence was outstanding, and most importantly, his speed, his defensive work, and his ability to track back were all exceptional. I had a strong feeling that we had to push for his inclusion, bring him into the squad, and encourage him to maintain this level without slipping back into old habits," Tuchel told journalist Ben Jacobs.

This truly marks a new chapter in Rashford’s career. While it’s not with his beloved Manchester United, there’s always a chance of a return. Yes, it’s just a loan to Birmingham, but Amorim has repeatedly made it clear that "Rashford has no future at Old Trafford."

United will face Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals — a crucial test for Amorim that could determine a lot. Meanwhile, Aston Villa will take on PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals. Rashford will have to work hard to prove he still belongs at a great club like Manchester United. Only time will tell how his journey unfolds — now, we just have to wait and see.
