In football, temporary dismissals may be introduced
The Telegraph reports that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has given provisional approval for testing rugby-style measures in major competitions like the Premier League. The experiment could begin as early as the following season.
IFAB may introduce 10-minute dismissals for offenses that, while not warranting a straight red card, are too serious for a mere caution.
This includes particularly "cynical" tactical fouls. An example given is Giorgio Chiellini's foul on Bukayo Saka in the EURO 2020 Final. The Italian defender impeded the English winger from escaping down the flank by grabbing his shirt from behind and bringing him down to the ground.
Temporary dismissals are positioned as an equivalent to a orange card.
