Harry Kane Finally Wins His First Trophy After Years of Heartbreak
Bayern Drop Points, But Kane’s Wait Is Over
Matchday 32 in the Bundesliga brought a mix of drama and unexpected results. Bayern Munich, who had led the league for most of the season, had the chance to clinch the title on Saturday — but let it slip away in stoppage time. Suspended for the match, Harry Kane had already made his way down to the pitch, ready to celebrate what would have been the first trophy of his career. But a dramatic late equalizer from Yussuf Poulsen for RB Leipzig dampened what seemed like the beginning of celebrations for the Bavarians.
Fortunately for Bayern, Sunday delivered another twist. Leverkusen, the defending champions, failed to win their away match despite a heroic comeback. Trailing 0–2 to Freiburg by the 82nd minute, they fought back in typical fashion to draw 2–2. However, that result wasn’t enough. With only two games remaining, Bayern now lead by eight points — which means the Bundesliga title is mathematically secured. And Harry Kane, at long last, is a champion.
A Career of Near Misses
It’s hard to put into words what this moment must mean for Kane. After years of frustration and countless lost finals, the Englishman, now 31, is finally about to lift the Meisterschale and be called a champion. This is exactly why Kane left his boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur — where he became their all-time top scorer — in search of silverware. During his 12 years with Spurs, he came painfully close to a trophy many times, but fate always denied him.
Kane’s first chance to win a title came a decade ago, in the 2014–15 season, when Tottenham reached the League Cup final — only to lose convincingly to José Mourinho’s dominant Chelsea side. The following year, Spurs were in the title race all the way into May, but it was Leicester City who completed one of football’s greatest underdog stories and lifted the Premier League instead.
In 2019, Spurs made it all the way to the Champions League final. Kane missed the epic semi-final against Ajax due to injury but returned for what was billed as the match of his life. Sadly, Liverpool scored within the first minute in Madrid, and the game — and trophy — quickly slipped away.
Another missed opportunity came in 2021, when Spurs lost another League Cup final, this time to Manchester City. While that result felt somewhat inevitable, the real heartbreak came on the international stage. Kane and England lost two consecutive European Championship finals. First, in 2021 at Wembley, they were beaten on penalties by Italy. Then, in 2024, Spain scored a late winner in the 86th minute to hand England another devastating defeat in Berlin.
Even Bayern’s Curse Didn’t Break It at First
Even after his move to Bayern, the trophy curse didn’t immediately lift. Kane had the chance to win silverware in his very first match — the 2023 German Super Cup — but Bayern were surprisingly thrashed by Leipzig. And the 2023/24 season turned into a disaster for the German giants. For the first time in 12 years, Bayern ended the season without a single trophy. With Kane in the squad, many began whispering about a "curse."
Justice at Last in 2025
But in 2025, justice was finally served. The best English striker of his generation — and one of the greatest forwards of the 21st century — has broken the spell. It’s likely that all neutral fans feel some joy and relief for Kane. He has truly earned this moment: lifting the trophy, singing with the fans, and bathing in celebratory beer.
