How many yellow cards lead to a Champions League suspension?
During the Champions League league phase and knockout phase, a player receives a one-match suspension after accumulating four yellow cards that have not already resulted in a red card. The next automatic suspension is triggered by the sixth yellow card, followed by the eighth and every subsequent even-numbered caution.
For example, a player booked in four different Champions League matches would miss the next European fixture. After serving that suspension, his caution count remains relevant, with another suspension arriving when he reaches six.
The system is different before the league phase. In the qualifying rounds, players are suspended after three yellow cards and then after further odd-numbered cautions such as the fifth and seventh, although UEFA also applies reductions to accumulated cards after certain qualifying rounds.
Do Champions League yellow cards carry into the knockout rounds?
Yes. Yellow cards collected during the league phase remain on a player's disciplinary record as the competition moves into the knockout phase, and outstanding suspensions normally carry forward as well.
That means a player who finishes the league phase on three yellow cards enters the knockout rounds only one booking away from suspension. The risk can therefore become particularly important during the knockout phase play-offs and round of 16.
A club progressing deep into the tournament has to manage that disciplinary situation carefully. One unnecessary caution in the first leg of a knockout tie can affect team selection for the return match or the following round.
When are Champions League yellow cards wiped?
All accumulated yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-finals and are not carried forward into the semi-finals. UEFA introduced this principle to reduce the possibility of a player missing the final merely because of cautions accumulated over several earlier rounds.
There is an important distinction, however. The regulations state that the yellow cards themselves expire after the quarter-finals; a suspension already triggered by accumulated cautions is treated separately under UEFA's disciplinary rules.
In practical terms, players who reach the semi-finals without triggering a suspension start that stage with a clean yellow-card record. A booking in the semi-final first leg therefore does not combine with an old league-phase or quarter-final caution.
Can a player miss the Champions League final because of yellow cards?
Under the current system, it is much more difficult than it was under older versions of UEFA's rules. Since accumulated cards are wiped after the quarter-finals, a player cannot arrive in the semi-finals already sitting one booking away from a ban because of cards collected earlier in the competition.
A player can still miss the final because of a red card or another disciplinary sanction. Serious offences can also lead UEFA's disciplinary bodies to impose longer suspensions than the standard one-match ban.
The clearing of yellow cards after the quarter-finals was designed specifically to reduce the chance of leading players being ruled out of the final for a series of relatively minor cautions spread over the season.
What happens after a red card?
A player or team official sent off is, as a general rule, automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. UEFA can increase the punishment when the offence is considered serious, and the sanction can in some cases extend across other UEFA club competitions.
A straight red card therefore works differently from accumulated yellow cards. The automatic suspension applies immediately, while any additional punishment depends on the nature of the incident and UEFA's disciplinary decision.
Two yellow cards received in the same match also result in a dismissal. Those cautions are treated within the red-card process rather than simply being added to the normal accumulation count in the same way as separate bookings across different matches.
Do qualifying-round yellow cards carry into the league phase?
No. UEFA's 2026/27 regulations state that yellow cards and outstanding yellow-card suspensions from repeated cautions expire after the play-offs and are not carried into the league phase.
That means players whose clubs reach the main 36-team competition effectively begin the league phase with a clean accumulation record. The four-card threshold then applies from the first league-phase fixture onwards.
This distinction is useful because the qualifying competition can involve several rounds before the main tournament even begins. UEFA's reset prevents players from reaching the league phase already close to a suspension because of cautions collected during July and August.
