Jude Bellingham

Bellingham Hasn't Scored for Real Since May. What Happened?

Jude Bellingham, a winner and the third top scorer (19 goals) in La Liga last season, also claimed a Champions League title and was a EURO 2024 finalist. According to GOAL, the Englishman is among the top 3 contenders for the Ballon d'Or. However, he has scored only once at the club level since May. What’s behind this decline?

Firstly, the arrival of Kylian Mbappé has played a role. The Frenchman’s transfer has pushed Jude into a more profound role, closer to his goal. Now, Bellingham plays a more defensive position, is less involved in finishing attacks, and does more dirty work, including bringing the ball forward to the attacking trio. Whereas he averaged 0.5 xG per match in the league last season, he now struggles to hit even 0.1.

Secondly, a shoulder injury is also a factor. Eleven months ago, Jude dislocated his shoulder in a match against Rayo Vallecano (0-0), and in some games last season, he even wore a brace that restricted his breathing during play. Santiago Araujo, a shoulder injury specialist, believes that Bellingham urgently needs surgery, as the pain hasn't subsided, according to some of Real Madrid’s medical staff members.

Moreover, Real Madrid is not in its best form right now, making it hard for even Jude to shine.
