The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season takes place on August 16, as Premier League champions Arsenal face FA Cup holders Manchester City at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The Community Shield will be staged away from Wembley for the first time since 2006, with the national stadium unavailable due to The Weeknd concerts.
Arsenal
Last May finally brought the moment Arsenal supporters had been waiting 22 years for. After years of near-misses, the Gunners finally shook off their reputation as perennial runners-up and returned to the top of English football. Mikel Arteta achieved what he had been building towards throughout his seven years in North London, and Arsenal now enter the new campaign not as challengers, but as the team everyone else is trying to catch.
There has been no shortage of ambition in the transfer market either. Arsenal's headline signing of the summer is Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães, brought in from Newcastle United for €87.5 million. His arrival adds even more control, aggression and experience to a midfield already built to dominate possession.
The champions only returned from their summer break at the beginning of August, leaving Arteta with a relatively short pre-season. Arsenal have nevertheless managed to squeeze four friendlies into two weeks. They opened with an impressive 4-1 victory over Girona before suffering back-to-back defeats against Real Betis (1-3) and Borussia Dortmund (2-3). Their final warm-up came on Wednesday, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Como.
Those results are unlikely to cause too much concern at this stage of the season, but conceding seven goals across four friendlies suggests Arsenal are still some way from reaching their usual defensive level. Against a Manchester City side with plenty of attacking quality, that could become important.
Manchester City
Manchester City failed to retain the Premier League crown last season, finishing runners-up to Arsenal, but their campaign was hardly unsuccessful. The Citizens collected both domestic cups and once again demonstrated their ability to deliver when silverware was on the line.
This summer, however, has brought a far more significant change. Pep Guardiola's decade-long era at the Etihad Stadium is over. His successor is Enzo Maresca, another coach shaped by Guardiola's footballing philosophy and a man who already has managerial experience in England with Leicester City and Chelsea. The transition from Guardiola to one of his former assistants makes City one of the most fascinating teams to watch at the beginning of the new season.
The club have also made a major statement in the transfer market, spending close to €135 million to sign midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. It is a huge investment, but one that underlines City's intention to immediately challenge for the Premier League title again under their new manager.
Like Arsenal, City opted against a lengthy pre-season. Their preparations began in early August with an Asian tour, where Maresca's side drew 1-1 with Inter before beating a K League selection 3-1. They then finished their exhibition campaign with another convincing 3-1 victory, this time against Atlético Madrid. Five goals across their final two friendlies suggest City's attacking machinery is already beginning to click.
Key Stats
Arsenal may have finished above Manchester City in the Premier League last season, but their head-to-head record tells a different story. The Gunners collected just one point from their two league meetings with City, drawing 1-1 at home before losing 2-1 at the Etihad. The teams also met in the League Cup final in March, where Manchester City came out on top again with a 2-0 victory.
Arsenal have historically enjoyed far greater success in this particular fixture. The North London club have lifted the Community Shield 17 times, while Manchester City have won it on seven occasions.
There is also an unusual setting for Sunday's showdown. The Community Shield returns to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium for the first time in two decades, giving the opening showpiece of the English season a very different backdrop from its traditional Wembley surroundings.

There is an interesting tactical subplot here: both Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca previously worked as assistants under Pep Guardiola. That shared influence should make their first competitive meeting particularly intriguing, although this early in the season neither manager is likely to have his team operating at maximum intensity.
What does look promising is the prospect of goals. Arsenal scored in all four of their pre-season matches but also conceded in every one of them, while Manchester City arrive in Cardiff having scored three goals against both the K League selection and Atlético Madrid. With both teams still finding their defensive rhythm after short summer preparations, attacking quality could have the upper hand.
The Community Shield may be the first official game of the new English season, but neither side will treat it as a friendly. Arsenal will want to underline their status as champions, while the beginning of the post-Guardiola era gives City additional motivation to make an immediate statement under Maresca. We expect both sides to create enough opportunities to get on the scoresheet.
