Arsenal Marching Towards the Title with Help from Set-Piece Coach

They've scored from set pieces in three consecutive matches.

The London team scored from identical corner kicks in the games against Tottenham and Manchester City. While some players caused chaos in the penalty area and others blocked the goalkeeper, Gabriel won the aerial duel from the cross into the six-yard box and smashed the ball into the net. In the match against Leicester, the type of delivery slightly changed (a direct cross to the far post), but the corner was still converted. Mikel Arteta celebrated these goals with the man behind the strategy, Arsenal’s set-piece coach, Nicolas Jover.

The Frenchman has been with the club for three years and has significantly improved the team's efficiency. Nicolas’ approach is marked by attention to detail and the design of set plays tailored to specific opponents. His main strategy is borrowed from American football.

Nicolas' primary goal is to create chaos in the opponent's penalty area, taking advantage of any mistakes. His influence on the team has been tremendous—before he arrived, Arsenal scored, on average, once every 32 corners. Now, they score every 16. In the 2023/24 season, the Gunners even matched the Premier League record for goals from corners in a single season (16 goals).

Jover has also improved Arsenal's defense from set pieces. Last season, the club conceded only six goals from corners. Mikel Arteta’s decision to bring Nicolas on board has been a 100% success.

They previously worked together at Manchester City, where their personalities clicked. The two coaches share similar values: attention to detail and a strong work ethic. They even look somewhat alike.
