Anfield Reclaims the Throne: 2024/25 Premier League Season Review

The 2024/25 Premier League season had it all — title drama, tactical masterclasses, scandal, shocking collapses, emotional farewells, and breathtaking goals. After four years of Manchester City dominance, the title changed hands — and it went back to the red half of Merseyside.

Here’s how the season unfolded, who made it to Europe, who went down, and what moments will be remembered for years to come.

Liverpool: Champions Once Again

After a summer of transition, few expected this from Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp was gone, Arne Slot stepped in — and doubts were everywhere. But the Dutchman turned them into belief. By the turn of the year, Liverpool were flying. A 12-game winning streak and key victories over City (2-1) and Spurs (5-1) proved decisive.

They sealed the title with games to spare, lifting the Premier League trophy at Anfield in a sea of red. The Kop roared like it hadn't since 2020.

Mohamed Salah? An absolute force. He finished the season with 29 goals and 18 assists, matching the legendary Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s single-season goal contribution record of 47. A king among kings.

Europe: Who’s In and Who Missed Out

  • Champions League: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. Yes, Chelsea — Mauricio Pochettino’s side rallied late and snuck into fourth.
  • Europa League: Aston Villa and Newcastle. Unai Emery did it again — a European spot without heavy spending.
  • Conference League: Nottingham Forest — their best season in decades.

Noticeably missing? Manchester United. For the first time in modern history, they finished 15th — and are completely out of Europe.

Scandals & Chaos

No season in England is complete without off-the-pitch drama. This one had plenty.

  • Manchester United’s meltdown: Ten Hag’s side suffered their worst league finish ever. Fan protests, dressing room leaks, and managerial uncertainty defined their campaign.
  • VAR strikes again: A disallowed Salah goal against Spurs — due to a technical VAR error — sparked fury across fanbases. The FA admitted fault. Points? Never returned.
  • Trent’s farewell? Alexander-Arnold’s tearful final appearance at Anfield felt like goodbye. Rumors of a Real Madrid move are gaining traction.

Match of the Season

It’s hard to pick just one — the 2024/25 Premier League season gave us multiple instant classics. But a few matches stood out from the rest:

  • Tottenham 3–6 Liverpool (Dec 22, 2024) — A nine-goal spectacle. Liverpool blitzed Spurs in the first half, but the hosts responded with flashes of brilliance. A chaotic, end-to-end slugfest that left fans breathless.
  • Arsenal 2–2 Liverpool (May 11, 2025) — Tactical intensity, two top-tier sides exchanging blows, and late drama. This one had title implications and Champions League energy.
  • Liverpool 5–1 Tottenham (Apr 27, 2025) — In terms of meaning, this was the one. Liverpool clinched the Premier League title in style, steamrolling Spurs with pace, precision, and pure dominance at Anfield. Salah’s double, Núñez’s goal and assist, and a title-winning celebration made this the crowning moment of the season.

All three delivered drama, goals, and quality — but for what it meant, Liverpool 5–1 Tottenham may just edge it as the match of the season.

Goal of the Season

While the official Premier League Goal of the Season award hasn’t been announced yet, several stunners from the 2024/25 campaign stand out as top contenders:

The Brighton winger delivered a moment of brilliance against Chelsea, weaving through defenders before curling a shot into the top corner. It won February’s Goal of the Month and sparked viral praise across the football world.

The Aston Villa forward smashed home a thunderous volley from outside the box, leaving the Everton goalkeeper with no chance. It earned him the Goal of the Month award and remains one of the most powerful strikes of the season.

While the final award remains undecided, these goals were undoubtedly among the most spectacular — and could easily take the crown when the Premier League makes its official selection.

Stars of the Season

  • Mohamed Salah: Player of the Year. 29 goals, 18 assists. A monster campaign.
  • Kobbie Mainoo (Man United): The only bright spot in a disastrous United season.
  • Arne Slot: Arrived under pressure. Delivered a Premier League title in year one.
  • Unai Emery: Quietly brilliant again with Villa — back in Europe, tactically elite.

Who Disappointed

  • Tottenham: Started strong, faded badly. Only a Europa League triumph saved their season — and got them into the UCL through the back door.
  • Brentford: Mid-table mediocrity when European ambitions were real.
  • Ipswich, Leicester, Southampton: All relegated. Leicester’s downfall, just years after a fairytale title, hit hardest.

What’s Next?

The summer will be wild.

  • United need a manager, a rebuild, and a miracle.
  • Liverpool might say goodbye to more legends — and spend big again.
  • City won’t take losing lightly — expect a fierce response.
  • Leeds and Southampton are back — fresh stories await.

But for now, this was Liverpool’s year. Anfield is smiling again. The Premier League has a new (old) king.
