A Player from Luton Town Experienced a Heart Stoppage During a Match in the English Premier League
Tom Lockyer, a player for Luton Town, who lost consciousness during a match in the English Premier League against Bournemouth, suffered a cardiac arrest, as reported on the club's official social media account X.
The 17th-round Premier League encounter occurred on Saturday in Bournemouth but still needs to be completed. In the 59th minute of the match, with a score of 1-1, Lockyer collapsed unconscious on the field, after which the match was stopped. Subsequently, the referee decided not to resume the game.
«Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher. He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides. Tom was transferred to the hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside. We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern, and loving messages for Locks,» the club's press release states.
Lockyer lost consciousness on the field for the second time in a year. Previously, he fainted during the final playoff match for promotion to the Premier League against Coventry in May. At that time, he was hospitalized and underwent heart surgery. In June, the 29-year-old defender received permission to continue his football career.
Lockyer has been playing for Luton since 2020. In the current season, the Welsh defender has played 15 matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
